چکیده

M e t h o d s Data sources: MEDLINE, EMBASE/ Excerpta Medica (to June 2006), reference lists, and experts in the field. Study selection and assessment: English-language studies that evaluated the diagnostic test performance of MRI in mainly adult patients (≥ 80% of patients ≥ 16 y of age) with foot infection or suspected osteomyelitis of the foot or ankle, using bone biopsy (histologic analysis or culture) as the reference standard. 16 studies (n = 485, mean age range 46 to 66 y) met the selection criteria. Outcomes: Sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio, and positive and negative likelihood ratios (LRs).

Diagnosing Diabetic Foot Osteomyelitis: Narrative Review and a Suggested 2-Step Score-Based Diagnostic Pathway for Clinicians

The diabetic foot infection remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in many patients and remains a challenging diagnosis for most clinicians. Diagnosis is largely based on clinical signs supplemented by various imaging tests. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is not readily available to many clinicians, and bone biopsy, which is the accepted criterion standard for diagnosis, is rarely p...

Radionuclide Imaging of Musculoskeletal Infection

Radionuclide imaging studies are routinely used to evaluate patients suspected of having musculoskeletal infection. Three-phase bone imaging is readily available, relatively inexpensive, and very accurate in the setting of otherwise normal bone. Labeled leukocyte imaging should be used in cases of “complicating osteomyelitis” such as prosthetic joint infection. This test also is useful in clini...

Expert opinion on the management of infections in the diabetic foot.

This update of the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot incorporates some information from a related review of diabetic foot osteomyelitis (DFO) and a systematic review of the management of infection of the diabetic foot. The pathophysiology of these infections is now well understood, and there is a validated system for classifying the severity of infections based on their clinical ...

Continuing Education on Radionuclide Imaging of Musculoskeletal Infection: A Review

There are numerous imaging tests for diagnosing musculoskeletal infection. Radiographs are routinely performed, because even when not diagnostic, they provide an anatomic overview of the region of interest that could influence subsequent procedure selection and interpretation. Magnetic resonance imaging is sensitive and provides superb anatomic detail. Bone scintigraphy accurately diagnoses ost...

Magnetic resonance imaging for diagnosing foot osteomyelitis: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND Uncertainty exists regarding the optimal workup of patients with suspected osteomyelitis of the foot, many of whom have diabetes mellitus. We conducted a meta-analysis to determine the diagnostic test performance of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for osteomyelitis of the foot and compared this performance with that of technetium Tc 99m bone scanning, plain radiography, and white bl...
